Padded Headboard Turtorial

I've never written out a tutorial before but this one is pretty simple and a few people have asked for it so here we go!

Step 1: Measure. Measure the width of your bed and add 2 inches. Then measure from about halfway down your mattress to whatever point you want your bed height. For example my bed a queen size and is 60 inches wide (plus 2 inches =62") and I wanted a fairly tall headboard so I went with 40". Total = 40"x 62"

Step 2: Shopping!!! You will need a thick foam (I went with egg carton foam and just bought a queen bed size and cut it down) and some quilt batting and some fabric. I chose a thick and sturdy upholstery fabric but any cotton will do. Just make sure your fabric wont stretch too much because this could affect the stapling process.

Step 3: Get Wood. The wonderful men at my neighborhood Lowes helped me out, cut my wood and even loaded into my car. I used a 4ft x 8ft piece of 3/4" plywood ($6).

Step 4: Cut materials. You will want your foam piece to be exactly the dimensions of your wood. Mine was 40"x 62". You will want to cut your batting and fabric larger to account for wrapping and stapling. Safest is to add 4" in each side (so remember this when buy materials).

Step 5: Staple! SOOOO easy! Lay materials on floor with wood on top and staple. I did it in 2 parts because my fabric has a horizontal and vertical pattern so I decided to staple the batting an foam first then do fabric second so I could be sure it was lined up properly. Easiest way is to put one staple on each side in the middle to ensure that each side is correct then finish of each side pulling firmly so there is no bubbling. Then..... your done! Flip over and admire your work!

Step 6: Attaching to wall or bed. There are a couple different ways to do this. One way is to save some wood, cut out legs and attach to headboard and bed by screws. I chose to not attach it to my bed but instead attach it to the wall. I used some wall hanging velcro strips from 3M. They are fantastic! They are made to hang picture frames up to 16lbs so I got 2 packages able to hang 32lbs which this is nowhere near. I placed them on the back all over and stuck it to the wall (with hubbys help). Viola!
